More news of the demolition of local broadcast services by the BBC arrived last week. Effectively local TV news bulletins at breakfast and at 10.30pm will be drastically reduced in length. Together with the already announced shrinkage of local radio staff in the region this is another dagger in the heart of BBC local broadcasting. Regionally BBC WM, CWR in Coventry and BBC Hereford and Worcester will all be affected and reduce local listening for regional commuters as well as those needing full transport updates, detailed weather, and local headlines.

                The BBC does have an answer- it’ll all be online. Not much help for those not computer savvy, or those on public transport with radios or car drivers or those watching TV before venturing forth. The media landscape is changing and by making these adaptions they believe reduced hours, networking and streamlined local radio is a great idea and, in my view, inevitably listening to BBC local radio will continue to decline until there is silence on the airwaves but do try a podcast or BBC Sounds.
