Radio Training

Mike has always had a strong interest in radio training.  During the 1990s he was a member of the Midlands Media Training Consortium, which funded media training courses in the region.  Over the years he has been active in developing and promoting training courses that specifically meet the needs of the industry.

Mike Owen Media has been at the forefront of industry training initiatives. We conducted the first industry-wide survey of radio training needs in 2005.  This covered the entire radio sector in the Midlands (BBC, commercial radio, and the fledgling community radio stations of the time).  It was used to inform the development of a unique radio training programme.  The course aimed to enhance the career development of industry professionals as well as to provide new entrants with a grounding in the skills needed.

Since then we have worked closely with Skillset (the Sector Skills Council for the Creative Industries) and the Radio Skills Development Forum.  We have achieved accreditation with UK awarding bodies and have operated a number of successful radio training programmes.

In 2007 Mike Owen was invited to become a member of a pilot programme organised by the Quality Improvement Agency.  The ongoing programme is designed to create new resources and techniques in radio training for use in further and higher education.

From 2005 to 2009 Mike Owen Media operated several radio training programmes.  We are an accredited Centre of Learning with both OCR and NCFE.  We have delivered training initiatives to more than 100 beneficiaries.  You can read some more information about these training programmes below.
