Remembering Stephen Rhodes a consummate professional

Stephen Rhodes

The cock-up at the Oscars really made me think about the multitude of award ceremonies I have attended or been involved in in some way over the years and making the announcement of the wrong winner is something as an organiser you go to massive pains to ensure doesn’t happen. I looked back at some of the award ceremonies we produced for the RTS MIdlands Centre for 5 years and the 2001, 2002 events that Stephen Rhodes did the voice-overs for the show in his inimitable style as he had done for Family Fortunes for all those years. Ironically in one of our production years Les Dennis was the presenter. Stephen first did it in 2001 I think when Jasper Carrott did most of the presenting!A sad loss but we would never have made the mess with the announcements – a tribute to Stephen’s professionalism from the booth and sensible golden envelope management.

I hear how it went wrong but I think they were being too clever!

Here are some of the 2002 winners below: I think the highlight was Warren’s acceptance speech after far too much wine! He did it in a cod Oscar style American accent and well done Ashley Blake.
